While the summer heat in Crete can be exhausting, Crete is a great all year round destination for those who prefer a more active holiday experience. Crete's rugged terrain, soaring mountains and dramatic coastline can give great opportunities for challenging holidays. You can climb its mountains, ski on Lefka Ori in winter, cycle its plateaus and walk to your hearts content in spring and autumn. With excellent horse riding tracks and an abundant array of water sports from canoeing to more extreme sports.

Considering the amount of mountains on Crete, there are not that many places where you could practice rock climbing because most of the rock is limestone and isn't very solid. Check some of the possible routes at www.climincrete.com

There are a few horse riding stables in West Crete: Zefiros horse riding club in Tersanas, Akrotiri, Zoraida's horse riding in Yeorgioupolis and the riding centre of Deres located in the hills south of Maleme.

The strong summer breezes which spring up most afternoons the 'meltemi' winds make the Cretan coasts ideal for windsurfing. This phenomenon is a special opportunity for surfers to meet an adventure full of thrill and excitement. You will find windsurfing coaching at most resorts such as Almyrida and Yeorgioupoli. The Hellenic Windsurfing Association can provide you with general information.
One of the top beaches for windsurfers is the Palaikastro area in Kouremenos bay. This beach is located in Lasithi district, at the North-East side of Crete.

Yachting is an excellent way to see the island of Crete, however its distance from other islands mean it not really as popular as others for island hopping. There are daily sailing excursions and sailing along the southern coast allowing you to explore some of Crete's isolated and hidden beaches.

The Crete Golf Club is situated at Hersonissos, near Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and it's the first full 18-hole golf course to have been built on this beautiful Greek Island. The 6430-yard, par 71-desert style course has two loops of nine, which seamlessly blend into the existing landscape. The slopes, visible rocky ground, groundcover pants and absence of trees provide a character, which is easily identifiable as Crete.

Porto Elounda De Luxe Resort Golf Course is adjacent to the Elounda Mare Hotel in Eastern Crete the first 9-hole golf club

Also known as 'parapente' is a great way to experience the island if it takes your fancy! There are about 20 take off sites around Crete some on the coast and others taking in the mountains. For more information go to International Centre of Natural Activities www.icna.gr
