Gavalohori is a Byzantine village founded in 913 A.D. It was named after the royal family of Gavalades, who acquired it when Crete was divided between the 12 Byzantine princes in 1182. It is a traditional village with lovely stone built houses,on the edge of the village, you can walk to the famous wells built during the time of the Gavalades period built on this landscape of rare beauty. With its beautifully restored stone houses, the village is full of hustle and bustle during the day whilst still keeping its sleepy atmosphere, it is an ideal location for those seeking to live near but not inside a vibrant traditional Greek village. There are a few restaurants and cafes, small supermarket and a bakery.



Built around a picturesque cove and harbour, Almyrida still has the air of a fishing village. Quiet even in the busy months, This small seaside resort has two sandy Blue Flag beaches the smaller one to the west and a long curving beach to the east. Both have loungers and parasols for rent - the eastern side is particularly safe for young children. Where you can simply relax or take part in the activities offered such as windsurfing or canoeing. The beach which is in a bay is protected from the prevailing wind by a small island. There are a number of fresh fish tavernas, shops and cafes lining the bay. It lies opposite the cape of Akrotiri with the deep blue waters of Souda Bay set as the backdrop.
